On October 6, 2026, Mistral launched a public preview of Mistral Large 4, nicknamed le Chonk. The company describes it as a natively multimodal mixture-of-experts model with about one trillion total parameters and roughly fifty-two billion active parameters, available today through a preview API on Mistral Studio.
Mistral highlights coding, agentic workflows and visual understanding as core strengths, and says it will release the weights by the end of the month. Until then it is red-teaming the model with cybersecurity partners and agencies while continuing post-training.
Developers can evaluate the preview API now for repository edits, terminal tasks and multimodal document work. After the weights ship, teams that need sovereign or on-prem deployment will be able to run the same model under their own control.
