How the two approaches work
A website builder lets you finish the site in its own editor, and the site is hosted on the platform. Framer and Pineapple Builder both have a free plan that uses a platform-provided address; to connect your own domain you move to a paid plan billed by the month.
Building with Claude Code works differently. You ask an AI coding tool, in conversation, to write the web files directly on your computer. The result is a folder you can put on any host that serves web pages. With Sketchry Skills, the result is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Where the site lives and who can take it
A builder's site lives on the builder. Hosting, domain setup and backups are handled for you, and in exchange the site goes wherever the platform goes. Hocoos is an example: the AI website builder now says on its site that it is no longer operating and only offers a download of each site's HTML copy, available until April 23, 2026 (as seen on its website on October 9, 2026).
A site built with Claude Code starts out as files on your own computer, so changing hosts means moving one folder.
How the cost adds up
Builders charge per site, by the month or the year, so the longer you keep a site and the more sites you run, the more you pay. That is how the paid plans of Framer and Pineapple Builder are billed.
With Claude Code the cost is the subscription to the AI tool plus a place to host the site. A plain static site can often sit on a host with a free plan, so a second or third site does not bring another monthly fee.
What you need to know
Builders are the friendliest: open a browser, drag things around and edit text in the editor, with no code at all.
Claude Code asks you to learn an AI coding tool first: installing it, pasting in instructions, previewing the result on your own computer and putting the files on a host. You do not write the code yourself, but you do need to be willing to learn those steps.
Design freedom
A builder's layouts are made of its own components. That keeps things reliable, but you cannot go beyond its framework. Claude Code has almost no limits: full-screen animation, frames that play as you scroll and unusual interactions are all possible. The catch is that the result depends on the instructions you give.
Asking an AI to "make a restaurant website" often returns a very ordinary layout. That is what a Skill is for: the design spec and the method are written in advance so the result is consistent.
How you make changes later
With a builder you edit inside the editor. With Claude Code you tell the AI what to change, or edit the files yourself. The files are yours, so handing the site to another designer or developer is easy.
Which one fits
Choose a builder if you want to go live as fast as possible, need built-in hosting, forms and bookings, and do not want to touch code at all.
Choose Claude Code if you are a freelancer or designer who has to hand source files to a client, want unusual animation, already use an AI coding tool, or prefer a site that is not tied to a single platform.
The two are not mutually exclusive. You can test an idea on a builder first and then build your own final version.
Where Skills come in
Sketchry's website Skills are made for the Claude Code route. Each Skill comes with an asset pack and a complete design spec. Paste it into Claude Code, Codex or Cursor and the AI builds the full site, then you swap in your own brand and photos.

FAQ
Do I have to know how to code to build a website with Claude Code?
No, the AI tool writes the code. You do need to operate the tool: installing it, pasting in instructions, previewing on your own computer and putting the files on a host.
Where do I put the finished website?
It is an ordinary set of web files, so any host that serves static sites works, such as Netlify or Cloudflare Pages. Many of them have free plans.
Can I move a site off a website builder?
It depends on the platform. Some let you export or download a copy of the site, but an exported copy cannot always be opened again in the original editor. Check for an export option before you choose a builder.
Which is cheaper?
It depends on how many sites you make and for how long. A builder's cost builds up month by month. Claude Code costs the AI tool subscription plus hosting, so the more sites you make, the less each one costs.
