What is SynthID Detector? Google's AI content checker

SynthID Detector is a Google tool opened to everyone on October 7, 2026 that checks images, video and audio for SynthID AI watermarks.

On October 7, 2026, Google DeepMind opened SynthID Detector to everyone, available globally in English. SynthID, introduced by Google in 2023, adds imperceptible watermarks to AI-generated images, video and audio. Google says it has watermarked over 180 billion images and videos, along with 240,000 years of audio content.

The new SynthID Detector checks whether an image, video or audio file was made with AI from Google or its partners, including OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao, with Apple coming soon. Google first offered an early version to media professionals last year. According to press coverage, you sign in with a Google, OpenAI or Apple account and get roughly 10 checks per day.

The detector can only find content that carries a supported watermark. If no SynthID mark is found, that only means no such watermark was detected, and it does not prove a file is authentic. Microsoft and Meta also run their own watermarking and verification standards.

Google says SynthID Detector joins the built-in verification features in Google Search, the Gemini app and Chrome, which now handle over 1 million requests a day. Media generated by Google models such as Nano Banana, Veo and Lyria, and by tools such as Gemini, Flow and Vids, carries a SynthID watermark.
